University of Arizona Hiking Club Constitution

Preamble

We, the members of Ramblers, do hereby ordain this constitution in order to encourage and facilitate hiking among the students, faculty and staff of the University of Arizona.

Article I. Name

The name of the club shall be Ramblers.

Article II. Membership

Any student at The University of Arizona is eligible to be an active member and hold office, as well as any member of the faculty, or staff interested in hiking.

Non-students and other community members not otherwise associated with The University of Arizona may act as associate members, but may not vote in elections or hold office.

Article III. Officers

Section 1. Elected Officers

The elected officers of the club shall be a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer.

Section 2. Elections

The officers shall be elected annually, in April. Nominations shall be from the floor, and the officers shall be elected by majority vote of regular members at a regular meeting. The voting will be by secret ballot.

Section 3. President

The duties of the President shall be to coordinate all activities of the organization, to be a liaison to the University community, to be the official representative of the organization, to call regular and special meetings, to preside at meetings and to prepare the agenda for meetings.

Section 4. Vice-President

The duties of the Vice-President shall be to assume the duties of the President in the latter's absence, to write hike information on the blackboard during meetings, and to assist the President in coordinating the activities of the club.

Section 5. Secretary

The duties of the Secretary shall be to post upcoming hikes at a designated place, and to handle all club correspondence.

Section 6. Treasurer

The Treasurer shall be responsible for maintaining the club's finances and fund-raising activities.

Section 7. Vacancy

In case of a vacancy in the office of Vice-President or Secretary-Treasurer, the President shall appoint a replacement to serve until the next scheduled election. If the office of President is vacant, the Vice-President shall succeed to the Presidency, and appoint a new Vice-President to serve for the remainder of the term.

Section 8. Removal of Officer

Any member of this organization may call for the removal of an officer by election. In this event an election to determine whether or not the officer will be removed will be held no later than two weeks after the request is made, the exact date to be determined by the President. A simple majority is sufficient to remove the officer in question. An officer who has been voted out of office will continue in the position until elections are held to determine a replacement. The date of these elections will be determined by the President and will be held no later than one week after an officer's removal has been voted on.

Section 9. Appointed Positions

The appointed positions of the club shall be the Equipment Manager and the Web master. The duties of the Equipment manager will be to maintain all club property. The duties of the Webmaster will be to maintain the Ramblers Hiking Club website.

Article IV. Activities

Section 1. Meetings

Regular meetings shall be held every week during the school year, to bring together students and faculty and staff members interested in hiking, to transact club business, and to propose and discuss future hikes and excursions.

Section 2. Instruction

Ramblers will instruct members in the skills necessary for safe and enjoyable wilderness travel.

Section 3. First-Aid

The club will maintain a first-aid kit at all times. This kit will be carried on all club hikes, and will be available to members for use at other times.

Section 4. Equipment

Ramblers may, upon vote of the membership, purchase hiking equipment for use by the members. The club may subscribe to publications, which will be available to members.

Section 5. Hiking Information

Ramblers will gather information on trails and hikes in Southern Arizona, for use by persons interested in hiking.

Section 6. Hiking Trips

Ramblers will sponsor hikes for the members during the school year.

Article V. Amending the Constitution

This constitution and by-laws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of a quorum of regular members at a regular meeting.

Article VI. Statement of Non-profit status

This is a not-for-profit organization.

Article VII. Statement of Non-discrimination

This organization shall not discriminate on the basis of age, color, ethnicity, gender, national origin, disability or handicap, race, religion, sexual orientation, Vietnam Era veteran status, or any other present or future protected status. This policy will include, but is not limited to recruiting, membership, organization activities or opportunities to hold office.

Article VIII. Club Policy

Club policy, as presented in a separate Club Policy document, shall be used as a guide for actions of the club not covered by the constitution.

Article IX. Statement of Non-Hazing

This organization will not conspire to engage in hazing, participate in hazing, or commit any act that causes or is likely to cause bodily danger, physical harm, or personal degradation or disgrace resulting in physical or mental harm to any fellow student or person attending the institution.

Article X: Statement of Compliance with Campus Regulations

This organization shall comply with all University and campus policies and regulations, and local, state, and federal laws.

Bylaws

  1. Dues: There shall be no dues to become a member.
  2. Transportation costs: Drivers shall be reimbursed by passengers according to a prearranged schedule for each hike sponsored by the club.
  3. Safety Instruction: In safety instruction for new members, the importance of staying on the trail, staying together, and carrying proper clothing and equipment will be stressed. Every Ramblers member should know how to read a topographic map, should be able to recognize prominent landmarks in Southern Arizona, and should know what to do if injured or lost.
  4. Carrying of Matches: The person leading a Ramblers hike shall make sure beforehand that adequate matches are taken on the hike.
  5. Carrying of First-Aid Kit: The person leading a Ramblers hike shall make sure beforehand that a first-aid kit is taken on the hike.
