Outreach Committee:
Outreach Coordinator: Casey Thornbrugh
Description:
The outreach committee is
responsible for communicating with potential schools (k-12 grade, community
colleges, and universities) our chapter will work with. Committee
members will help form partnerships for the purpose of helping to establish
chapters and recruit students for higher education. Current activities
include forming partnerships with Pima Community College, Tohono O'odham
Community College, and the Pasqua Yaqui Reservation.
Past Events:
- Native American Family Technology Journey (November 14th and 15th,
2005)
Description: Our AISES chapter helped IBM host 32 students from Navajo
Preparatory School. We assisted with workshops and provided the
entertainment for the evening banquet. We also presented our chapter and
the overall mission for AISES.
- Ha:san Preparatory School Shadowing Day
Description: Our chapter invited High School students to take a tour on
U of A campus. Their tour consisted of visiting the Native American Wing
(Graham-Greenlee). The students also got a chance to sit in on college
classes and take part in a interactive workshop to assess their concerns
about college life.
Volunteer Committee:Team Leader: Nikki Alex
Description:
Volunteer Committee is responsible for creating ideas
for places to volunteer at and to plan events for members to take part in.
Committee members assist in establishing contacts with the University and
the community to provide a networking system for the purpose of service and
support. Current activities include community service events that center on
helping families, elders and youth in the Tucson Community.
Past Events:
- Native American Month Movie Night "Dreamkeeper" (November 29th,
2005)
Description: Our Chapter sponsored a movie to promote Native American
Month. Audience included members from our chapter and also students and
families. We also handed out free frybread and had door prizes.
- Thanksgiving Basket of Love (November 22nd, 2005)
Description: Our chapter provided a Thanksgiving to a family of 3 in
need of food for the Holidays. We got help in locating a family from the
Tucson Indian Center.
- Miss Native American U of A Pageant (November 11th, 2005)
Description: Our chapter helped with setting up, assisting the
contestants backstage. Our Chapter also donated money towards the event.
- Tucson Children's Pow-wow (October 1st, 2005)
Description: Members volunteered at the Tucson Children's Museum to
facilitate fun activities for children who attended the pow-wow. Our
Chapter also had a booth at the pow-wow to promote our upcoming events.
- AZPC Golf Tournament (October 22nd, 2005)
Description: Members helped with setting up equipment for registration,
helped register participates and sold raffle tickets.
- RAIN Cultural Event (October 14th, 2005)
Description: Members provided assistance with preparing Indian Tacos.
- Adopt a Roadway (September 24th, 2005)
Description: Members picked up trash near the Pascua Yaqui Reservation.
