Meet the new UofAFC President: Colin Prenger

Posted: 9/27/13

The new semester ushers in new classes, lots of heat and a new President of the University of Arizona Flying Club. Meet Colin Prenger and pre-business junior that undoubtedly has a love for flying. A member of the club for several years Colin was elected unanimously by the club on April 30th and held his first ever meeting as president today. Fresh off getting his commercial license during summer break Colin addressed members of the club Thursday afternoon announcing several planned fly out’s, a movie night and even giving a quick lesson on common aircraft communications and taxi diagrams. Needless to say the future of the UofAFC looks bright with Prenger at the yoke!

Hard Hats Required: UofAFC's New Website

Posted: 9/27/13

Change is ever present around the University of Arizona and now it has come to the UofAFC. The beginning of the fall semester not only brings the start of college football (GO CATS!) it will also bring a new look to the UofAFC website. New Webmaster Ryan Lofgren has taken on the tall task of updating and improving the site that he himself describes as “Ugly beyond belief. I want the website to represent the club and the University of Arizona in the best way possible and if that means rewriting every line of code I’ll do it.” The update will be implemented over the coming month and Lofgren hopes to have it completed by October 1st. “I think that’s a reasonable goal. It will be a lot of work but will be completely worth it in the end” Ryan said stated when asked about the timeline of the revamp. Ryan also gave some insight of the features that might be implemented into the new site. “I want to make it college student friendly and to me that means media connected, whether it be Facebook, YouTube or Twitter, etc.” Ryan revealed. The website www.uofaflying.com is hosted by ASUA and has been minimally maintained by the clubs webmasters over the years. With new webmaster Ryan at the yokes it clearly has the potential to shine (there’s only one way up from the bottom). Continue to check back this month to see the sites progress!

Free Fallin: Members Take a Fall

Posted: 9/27/13

During the spring semester the UofAFC felt the need to do something a little crazy so on Saturday, April 27th they all decided to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. That’s right the club made the short drive up to the skydiving capital of the world Eloy Municipal Airport to go skydiving at Skydive Arizona one of the nation’s leading skydive companies. The club used some fundraising funds to help members pay for the expensive trip shelling out enough to pay for half of all fee’s to jump. Club president Ellen Thomas was one of the few brave souls to attend the event and paid a little extra to get her jump filmed. Check out our Facebook page University of Arizona Flying Club to see the video and get involved in our next adventure!

$100 Free Breakfast: January Flyout

Posted: 9/27/13

For most getting breakfast includes pouring cereal into a bowl in their own kitchen or cracking a couple eggs on the skillet but for the UofAFC the only way to get breakfast is flying directly there. On January, 19th, two lucky club members and a member of the UANews got round trip tickets to Benson for a free breakfast of eggs and pancakes. Dr. Curtis one of a couple professors at the University of Arizona that volunteer their planes and time to the club took three slightly nervous and very excited clubs members for the ride of their lives. Benson Regional Airport holds a monthly fly-in and offers a free breakfast to all who come with an added incentive of some “discounted” aviation fuel (only $5.75 a gallon!). The crew piled in Dr. Curtis’ very own Cessna 185 and made the approximately 20 min flight to Benson but no without first doing a flyover of the U of A campus and the Davis Monthan AFB graveyard. Luck for you our UANews passenger brought her cameras along to document the trip. Check it out on YouTube by following this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39j1IQC7liY#t=71
