Mural Sessions

The Amoebas Band

Hello and Welcome to Muralcles!

Muralcles is a student-run club at the University of Arizona dedicated to brightening the lives of hospitalized children through crafts, music, and entertainment. Our name is a combination of 'mural' and 'miracles' (some of our original projects were painting murals for the kids!). We like to think that we play our small part in the miracle of healing! We are looking for students who are enthusiastic about making a difference in a child's day by providing a break from the health care routine.

Muralcles is based at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Our members go on two-hour visits with children at the University Medical Center as well as the Tucson Medical Center. To these session we bring planned crafts and music. We also are involved with Sunnyside School District in painting murals at local schools in Tucson. We typically work on a mural over the period of one semester. In addition to these activities the club also often participates in numerous other activities including Ben's Bells and Relay for Life.

Our Mission and History

Founded in September of 1999 by a University Marketing and Entrepreneurship senior, Lindsay Galbut, Muralcles' purpose is to deliver healing, friendship, and support to hospitalized children. It is an officially recognized student organization. There are 9 university students who comprise the Executive Board, which consists of: President, Vice President of Membership, UMC and TMC Hospital Coordinators, UMC Art Director, Music Director, Mural Director, Historian, and Webmaster . There are over 100 University student members, ranging from art and music majors to pre-medical and business. Muralcles gets its funding from donors around the city. Some of the largest contributors so far include: PICOR Commercial Real Estate Services, The Martin Galbut Family, Crescent Heights, Jim Click Jr., The Plaza Companies, Tucson Rotary Club and PostNet.

Since its inception, Muralcles visits the University Medical Center three to four times each month, bringing art and music to hospitalized children in the pediatric ward. Members also visit patients individually. Every patient at each volunteer session receives an art box filled with art supplies and craft materials, in addition to a hand-painted clipboard with a supply of paper. Hundreds of art boxes have already been distributed. The UMC Child Life Specialist commented, "We see children who return for clinic appointments and those re-admitted to the hospital carrying the art boxes." Over countless UMC patients have already benefited from the interaction with Muralcles volunteers. Not only do the patients smile and light up when Muralcles arrives, but so does the hospital staff. One Child Life Specialist stated, "They [Muralcles] are one of the best groups to have visited and helped out at our Child Life Program. The group's empathy and caring for the children is outstanding."

In addition to the 30+ individuals and corporations who have contributed to Muralcles, the media has been extremely enthusiastic toward and receptive to the organization. Muralcles was on the cover of Inside Tucson Business . The Arizona Daily Wildcat covered Muralcles' first visit to the UMC on the front page of the October 18, 1999 issue.

Muralcles will continue to bring even more happiness to children who are sick. In addition to the program's hospital visits and art box/clipboard/easel gifts, murals will be painted in patient rooms, common areas, and eventually operating room ceilings.

The energy, passion, and dedication amongst Muralcles members and supporters is already clearly evident.

Come join Muralcles and make a difference in the life of a child!
